Clear Vision

 

Have you set your goals for 2019? Are you sure you know exactly where you want to be this time next year? Take a minute to think, because the difference between "pretty sure" and "crystal-clear" is likely to be the most critical factor that will determine your success!

You may be familiar with James Dyson, the inventor who produced what is arguably the most familiar name in modern household appliances. He now has a reported net worth of $5.2 Billion USD, but it took him 15 years before the first successful bag-free vacuum cleaner was made. In that time he built over 5,000 prototypes. To be exact, he had 5,127 failed attempts at a bagless cleaner before his efforts finally paid off!

 

Maybe Mr Dyson was just an obsessive that eventually got lucky? Evidence would suggest not, since the Dyson brand has subsequently produced a number of other hugely successful products including the revolutionary hand-dryer. What is much more likely is that James Dyson's vision of what he eventually wanted to achieve, was so clear in his mind, that successfully reaching his goal was simply inevitable. He knew what the problem was, he had an exact vision of how the solution would look like, all he then needed to do was persevere until he reached his dream.

Before you wonder any longer why a fitness coach is spouting off about vacuum cleaners or begin to think I'm suggesting you consider how to revolutionise your household cleaning, I'll explain why this is massively relevant to your fitness; If you are one of my clients then we will have discussed the use of creating a vision of where you want to be and utilising visualisation techniques to consolidate that vision. James Dyson is a great example of exactly why I do this. You may have heard an expression used along the lines of "if you don't know where you want to go, then all roads will take you there". Equally it's not enough to have a vague idea of what you want either. If a client says to me "I want to lose weight" then any weight loss whatsoever, whether lean muscle or bodyfat, has technically achived their goal. The important details are; How much? How soon? And what kind??

 

Likewise if I jump in a cab and shout to the driver "France please!" and a number of hours later he kindly deploys me at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, technically I've arrived at my destination but I'm likely to be pretty disappointed if I was in fact hoping to see the port at St Tropez! Having a crystal-clear Vision of exactly what you want to achieve and maintaining and developing that vision every single week, is the only sure-fire way of both; mapping-out the route to get to where you want AND ultimately arriving exactly at that place.

The other consideration here is that I have zero doubts that, during those 15 years of trial and error, Mr Dyson didn’t suffer some turmoil about how well his journey was going and how long it was taking. I'm sure that constant visualisation was one of many tactics employed to keep himself driven. I don't expect any of my clients to have the perfect week every week, or to feel super-motivated every single day, but that isn't what's required! All that's required is that you keep your sights set on your goal and persevere over time (See previous article on "consistency"). Luckily, the goals you set with me should be achievable in around 12 weeks or less and in any case, 15-year goals would still be worth all the effort if the end result is indeed what you really want, as Dyson proves.

 

To ensure success in 2019 - create a clear vision of where you want to be, maintain it vigilantly and that is 100% where you'll get to. There's really no other option if it's the only direction you're travelling in! If you haven't already created your clear vision and/or consolidated and refined it this week, do it today!
